This past Saturday, April 14, 35 volunteers from our Washington DC based office, members of the local police department and the national philanthropic organization, Rebuilding Together, joined together in the Hume Springs neighborhood of Alexandria, VA, to support Charter’s national philanthropic initiative, Spectrum Housing Assist.
Miss Ruby has lived next to Willie and Gertrude in adjoining homes in Hume Springs for the past 38 years. But as these friends and neighbors have gotten older, and resources have become tighter, making repairs has gotten harder. Our volunteers provided critical repairs to both homes. The day’s work included replacing windows and storm doors, sealing roofs, installing fencing, and upgrading kitchens and bathrooms. We also made the homes more energy-efficient by installing efficient lighting and distributed Safe & Healthy Home Kits to other neighbors at the nearby community center.
“Miss Ruby,” as she prefers to be known, sat outside in the sun and oversaw the work being done both inside and outside her home. At 84 years of age, she has limited mobility which resulted in her home falling behind in repairs. Miss Ruby said of the day’s effort, “it’s like Christmas in April,” noting that without Spectrum Housing assist she would not be able to make the needed updates and repairs to her home.
Charter provides innovative broadband, cable and voice services under the brand name Spectrum to more than 26 million customers across 41 states. Strengthening the communities we live and work in is the foundation of our commitment to improve 50,000 homes by 2020. Since its inception, Spectrum Housing Assist has partnered with nonprofit organizations like Rebuilding Together, a national leader in safe and healthy housing, to improve thousands of homes with the help of 3,600 employee & community volunteers donating over 22,000 hours of their time. In 2018, Charter is planning to host more than 100 Spectrum Housing Assist events, including home rebuilds, Safe & Healthy Home kit distributions, and smoke alarm installations, to improve more than 13,000 homes in 28 states. We are proud that last weekend in Alexandria, VA, we moved a step closer to that goal.
